Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is an evidence-based approach to understanding and addressing common psychological problems such as depression, anxiety, stress, obsessive compulsive disorder, gambling and other addictions, post traumatic stress and eating disorders.
It is based on the understanding that the ways in which we think and perceive our life experiences affect how we feel and in turn respond to those experiences- and our responses usually feed back into how we think and perceive said life experience - in turn creating some really powerful loops/cycles.
Sometimes these loops are positive, where we have positive thoughts, say about meeting some friends, which influences positive feelings like excitement and in turn our behaviour such as calling ahead to confirm the meet-up and smiling when we arrive. The opposite is also true when we think negatively about meeting others, causing anxiety and in turn possibly making us avoid the activity. These negative loops are usually at the core of psychological problems.
During our initial session, we will work to identify the main problems, consider their impact across different aspects of life and talk through what better would look like or what you expect to get out of therapy.
In the follow up session, we can focus on exploring the impact of the problems in more depth, unpack treatment expectations and set some goals to work towards (measures of what better looks like).
In the subsequent sessions, we will work to use evidence-based models to formulate the problems in a manner that helps us to make sense of the problems and then consider the associated strategies for addressing said problems.
Following each session, we will agree on a few tasks that help us build on the in-session work. Sometimes we refer to these as homework tasks or in-between-session exercises. These are critical and people who engage in these tend to gain the most from therapy.
As we go through the sessions we will constantly check in on your experience of therapy and engagement in the in-between-session tasks. It's important to be open and honest about these experiences as they can influence how much you gain from the therapy.
The last few sessions will focus on replicating key strategies and consider how we can cement these in day-to-day life.
Coming soon - we will outline other treatment options in this section.
